Abstract: Would Tree Adjoining Grammar be a formalism capable of reaching the level of explanatory adequacy as defined by Noam Chomsky, that is, the level in which it is learnable by a child? In this paper, we explore this question based on a computational model of first language acquisition, dubbed IASMIM, in which the grammatical knowledge acquired can be properly characterized as a Tree Adjoining Grammar. With focus on the acquisition of syntactic categories, we also discuss some of the model’s predictions regarding sentence processing and the acquisition process.
